Turnheim: DIE KINDER DER KÄMPFER
The premiere of the film documentary DIE KINDER DER KÄMPFER marked the end of our institute’s research project on the 90th anniversary of the February Uprising. For the first time, the project focussed on a little-noticed chapter of Austrian history from the perspective of the 2nd and 3rd generation: the Republican Protection League. This was formed in 1923/24 as a counterweight to the Christian-social Heimwehr. From 12-14 February 1934, Social Democrats and Communists tried to defend the Republic against Austrofascism with weapons in their hands.
To mark the 90th anniversary of the February battles, DIE KINDER DER KÄMPFER not only travelled to the original sites, but also searched for the children and grandchildren of the now deceased fighters. This documentary film captures their memories and experiences – as a historical document for posterity. Scientists who analyse the events and their consequences also have their say. Almost 50 interviews totalling 27 hours were recorded.
To what extent does DIE KINDER DER KÄMPFER still characterise the events of February 1934 today? What does it mean to be a child of the Schutzbund? What can be learnt for the future from the events themselves, but also from the perspectives and experiences of the CHILDREN OF THE FIGHTERS?
